Fair Trade Fashion
Launched this Spring, Indilisi is the sustainable brand offering an antidote to fashion’s throwaway culture
Founded by Brett and Scott Staniland and Saffia Minney MBE, Indilisi seeks to change the way we make and wear clothes. Partnering with producers in Bangladesh, India, and Kenya, the brand aims to support smallholder farmers and maintain a sustainable practice through the entire design process.
The fashion industry relies heavily on newness. New collections, new trends, and new ‘It’ pieces define each season. While we all love new things, the industry's obsession with fresh releases may have sacrificed a more thoughtful approach to creation and design, contributing to the harmful trend cycles and rapid turnover that dominate our shopping habits and interactions with fashion. That said, we are always on the lookout for new brands that are disrupting the status quo, but what truly piques our interest are those that emphasise how their products are made, not just how they look.
Therefore, we’re thrilled to introduce you and your wardrobe to Indilisi, a Fair Trade brand that has captured our attention for all the right reasons. Launched this spring, Indilisi positions itself more as a social enterprise than just another new brand. It is radically transforming the way we shop, create, and engage with fashion. Indilisi was founded by multihyphenate twins, Brett and Scott Staniland, alongside entrepreneur and author, Saffia Minney. Brett and Scott are no strangers to the fashion scene; they regularly attend fashion weeks worldwide and use their platforms to advocate against unfair wages and promote sustainability within the industry. It’s evident that while the brothers possess impeccable taste and an eye for great style, they are concerned with more than just the surface appeal, with much of their content addressing the ethics, or lack thereof, in fashion, and taking a firm stand on the crucial issue of sustainability. Partnering with Saffia Minney on Indilisi, Saffia launched her own sustainable fashion label, People Tree, over 30 years ago, creating fully traceable products made from lower-impact materials while adhering to Fair Trade principles.
As an antidote to overconsumption culture, Indilisi’s first season is dedicated to crafting the ideal foundation pieces for any wardrobe. Versatile items are made with organic cotton, featuring oversized shirts, chore coats, cropped jackets with ballooned sleeves, and perfect summer dresses. Each piece is handcrafted and represents a modern and entirely sustainable version of the chicest ‘uniform’ attire for everyday dressing. Our favorites include the Artist Jacket, which strikes the perfect balance between blouse and overshirt, and the wide-legged Platzo Pants, offering an effortless silhouette enhanced by tailored touches. Taking it a step further, Indilisi also launched a range of surplus fabrics, promoting the use of high-quality materials while supporting the organic smallholder farmers who provide the fabrics.
Although the term artisanal is often misapplied, we would argue that Indilisi has rightfully earned that title with their completely sustainable business model and their incredibly chic debut collection. By distinguishing themselves from merely being another new fashion brand, Indilisi embodies ethical practices beautifully. With their new collection and surplus fabrics now available on their website, we highly recommend checking it out, especially if your summer wardrobe needs some TLC.
