Studio Job: The Shape of Things to Come

Collyn loves this… Because when it comes to being a barometer for the future, Studio Job are about as good as it gets. The Antwerp-based design duo, Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel, have been influencing the way we furnish our homes since they formed in 2000. Before anyone was talking about fantasy design and Tim Walker was just a twinkle in the eye of Vogue’s art directors, Studio Job were creating oversized urns and dinnerware fit for a giant. Their 2007 ‘Farm’ collection of homestead-inspired, highly polished tools cast in metal is the subject of a Designhuis permanent exhibition in Eindhoven exploring the ubiquitous importance and influential role of the farmer in today’s world. And nearly two years before the solemnity of religion and worship strutted its quiet self down the runway, Studio Job created an entire collection entitled ‘Gospel’ as an exploration of faith-inspired aesthetics. So if their work is anything to go by – it’s a pretty safe bet our attention is going to be turning to the machinations of industry. In collaboration with our other favorite dynamic, Dutch duo for the second time, Studio Job created the magnificent industrial scenography for Viktor & Rolf’s AW10/11 show, ‘Glamour Factory’, in Paris this last week. What’s exciting about their work is not only their influence over interiors and design, but the way they’ve managed, time and again to capture the imagination of fashion, media and lifestyle influencers the world over. And if this is what’s in store… well, we can’t wait.

Crash: Homage to JG Ballard

Emily loves this… Because sometimes (particularly after braving Topshop on a Friday afternoon) she has a sneaking suspicion that this is JG Ballard’s world, and we all just live in it. Celebrating the late sci-fi writer’s dystopian, S&M vision is a new show at Gagosian’s Kings Cross gallery, which gathers the darkest works from both artists who inspired Ballard and those who have been inspired by him. There are brilliant, brutal, infrequently seen works by Francis Bacon and Cindy Sherman, a Jake and Dinos Chapman-designed cover of an imaginary Ballard novel called Bangwallop, and a frankly gratuitous Damien Hirst oil of a blood-sprayed car bonnet entitled Suicide Bomber (Aftermath). Not your average, genteel Saturday-afternoon gallery viewing, and all the better for it.
