Cher loves this because… hookers have feelings too. The Girlfriend Experience is the newest film from Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director of Traffic and Sex, Lies, and Videotape. It stars the world-famous pornographic actress, model and industrial musician Sasha Grey as a high-end call girl, Christine, who trades in intimacy more than intercourse. She offers a “girlfriend experience”, a temporary simulation of an actual relationship. It’s not all sex sex sex, but rather hair fondling and talking. Set in the weeks leading up to the 2008 US Presidential election, Soderbergh’s latest attempt to capture the contemporary zeitgeist documents the epicentre of Western civilisation in a state of economical uncertainty and near-collapse. Thus Christine’s high-flying business clientele opt to confide in her about financial disorder over sex, as anxiety and desperation overcomes carnal lust. This is a lo-fi but fascinating film, and a highly recommended watch.
This was a great movie, I don’t know if any other actress could have brought such a great emotional experience the way that Sasha Grey did, and I think she was able to do that because of her experience in the porn industry, that and she puts her all into anything that she does.
