Cher loves this… Because sex sells. A joint effort from Ed and Nancy Kienholz, the tableaux exhibition is a reconstruction of a street corner in Amsterdam’s red light district, inviting onlookers to wander into its various nooks and crannies, and play peek-a-boo with mannequin whores. Notorious for creating art based on equally provocative topics like abortion and mental illness, the husband and wife duo have perfected a knack for really involving the onlooker in the art. As half the windows on the block are concealed with curtains, leaking only light and television murmur, intrigue climaxes and we make the transition from viewer to voyeur. Provocative in more ways than one, Hoerengracht’s red lights beckon with a come hither smile.
